If your Harley is equipped with a security system, you may encounter a scenario when the system seems to malfunction or not respond as expected.

Many Harley-Davidson owners have encountered situations when their Key Fob stopped working because of a dead battery, electromagnetic interference, or some issues in the security system itself.

The good news is that Harley-Davidson provides a unique PIN to bypass the security system. Hence, you can start your motorcycle engine with a PIN when the Key Fob is lost or its battery is dead.

In this guide, I’ll explain a step-by-step process to start a Harley-Davidson when its key fob is not working.

How To Start Harley-Davidson Without Key Fob

As I told you earlier, Harley-Davidson provides a security PIN to bypass the key fob in an adverse situation. The dealer must have provided the PIN when you purchased the motorcycle.

If you know your PIN, follow these steps to bypass key fob:

  1. First, leave your key fob beyond the range (10 feet).
  2. Turn on the ignition and immediately hold the left turn signal buttons until five dashes appear on the odometer gauge.
  3. Press the left turn signal to enter the first digit of the PIN.
  4. Press the right turn signal to skip to the second digit.
  5. Again, press the left turn signal until the second digit of your PIN appears.
  6. Press the right turn signal to skip to the third digit of your PIN.
  7. Repeat this process until you correctly enter all five digits of your security PIN.
  8. Then, press the start button, and your motorcycle will start.

If you enter the security PIN correctly, your motorcycle engine will start. You can ride your motorcycle to the nearest dealer shop and program the new key fob.

But what if you don’t remember your security PIN? The easiest way to find out Harley-Davidson’s security PIN is to contact the dealership.

How To Retrieve Harley-Davidson Security PIN

You can retrieve your PIN at home if your key fob is working. I have written a step-by-step process to retrieve or reset your Harley-Davidson PIN.

Here’s how to retrieve your Harley-Davidson PIN code:

  1. Set the kill switch button to the Off position.
  2. Turn on the ignition and turn the kill switch button to Run-Off-Run-Off-Run.
  3. Press the left indicator button twice.
  4. Press the right indicator button once.
  5. You’ll see your current PIN on the odometer gauge.
  6. To change your current PIN, press the left indicator button, and the first digit will change.
  7. Press the right indicator button to jump to the next digit.
  8. Repeat this process until you finish entering all five digits.
  9. Set the kill switch to the Off position to exit the programming mode, then switch off the ignition.

That’s it! You have successfully changed your Harley’s security PIN code. Remeber the entered PIN because this is the only way to start the engine in case you lost your key fob.

What is Factory PIN For Harley-Davidson?

Harley puts a standard factory preset PIN code and it is usually 31313 or 11111. However, it depends upon the dealer. They usually reset the default PIN code and a unique code for all their motorcycle.

Call your dealer and provide basic details like purchase date, VIN number, etc. and they will provide you the code. Some dealers put the last five digit of VIN number in reverse order.

Can You Start a Harley-Davidson Without Key Fob or PIN?

All Harely-Davidson motorcycle comes with theft protection security system to prevent unauthorized access. The ECU won’t allow ignition system to ON until you enter the correct PIN or you’ve a programed key fob.

If you lost your key fob and forgot the PIN, contact your dealer with valid purchase invoice. They’ll provide the new PIN code by ECU flashing that will cost around $300.
