What Is Exactly A Dual Sport Bike?

I was at a gas station on my Honda CRF450RL a few weeks ago. A person asked me- why you’re riding a dirt bike on the street? Isn’t it illegal?

I told him it is not a dirt bike but a dual sport. I noticed an unsatisfactory expression on his face.

After a few seconds, he asked – what the hell is a dual sport bike?

I explained to him, “A dual sport is a street-legal bike designed on a dirt bike frame. It can do both off-road and highway rides. You can legally commute on city streets, go on long-distance adventures, and ride in the dirt.”

So, if you’re also searching for something similar, read this article till the end. I will share my favorite dual-sport motorcycle and tell you the one thing that I didn’t like.

Suzuki DR-Z lineup is an old player in the dual-purpose category. DR-Z400 was introduced in early 2000 by replacing DR350.

For the last two decades, Suzuki hasn’t made any drastic change (except for the electric start) in design in the DR-Z400 lineup, and there is a reason behind this- it’s a trustworthy and powerful engine they don’t want to disturb.

Its finely tuned 398cc liquid-cooled engine with Mikuni BSR36 carburetor produces 39 horsepower and 33 Nm torque.

I still enjoy riding this bike on weekends to explore the greeneries of the forest and buy groceries.

Since its release, the XR650L is still a favorite street-legal dirt bike for many. It was designed for off-road but can also handle highways and adventure touring.

There have been no significant design changes except for colors and engine tuning since its release. Despite everything, the Honda XR650L is a practical and reliable dual-purpose machine.

It has a 5-speed manual transmission and approximately 11 liters of fuel tank capacity. So you can enjoy every terrain ride hassle-free.
